Tom Petty was one of the greatest songwriters ever but he was also a fan and over the years has covered many classics.   A hard list to make just as it is with his own songs but here are five classic songs Tom Petty has covered over the years.

"Needles and Pins"

A song that has been recorded by artist like Jackie DeShannon, The Searchers and The Ramones to name a few.   This live version featured Stevie Nicks.

"Goldfinger"

This is an instrumental version of the Shirley Bassey classic.  Another classic that has been performed by many artist over the years.  Tom and the band's version was featured on their Live Anthology.

"Any Way You Want It"

This is the Dave Clark Five version that has been covered by Kiss, The Ramones and by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.   Their recorded live version appears on their Live Anthology.

"So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star"

Originally done by The Byrds this is another classic that has been performed by many artists including Patti Smith, Nazareth and Black Oak Arkansas.

"Oh Well"

This is the Fleetwood Mac classic that was written by Peter Green.  It has been performed in concert over the years by Tom and the Band.   Their recorded version appears on the Live Anthology.

Five classics that Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have made their own over the years.  I'm sure there are many I have missed but these are five that came to mind when I was thinking of covers they have done live.  Any classics I've missed that should be on this list?
