Nothing says "beach food" quite like a hot dog, and, as I was in South Haven, Michigan this weekend, I was obliged to partake in the popular food, at Chomp, a new hot dog stand tucked away on the corner of Kalamazoo and Eagle. These aren't your typical dogs, my friends. They are gourmet through and through, from the exotic toppings to the brioche bun, and let me tell you, it's ALL about that bun. Say goodbye to soggy buns that break apart; the density of the brioche bun stands up to even the messiest of chili dogs.

All hot dogs at Chomp are available in regular or foot-long varieties, though I highly recommend sticking to the regular and getting more than one dog. Bring your friends and taste them all!

I sampled two dogs; the Jalapeno Popper dog (cream cheese, bacon, jalapenos), and their daily special, which happened to be the Hawaiian (pulled pork, crushed pineapple, jalapenos), and both were outstanding. The cream cheese on the Popper helped to diffuse the saltiness of both the dog and the bacon, and the pineapple on the Hawaiian was just the right amount of sweet.

Not everyone likes to think outside the hot dog box. There are traditionalists out there, and Chomp has them covered, too. Love a classic Coney? Think Chicago Style is the only way to go? Chomp's menu has something for the conventional to the adventurous.

So, the next time you need a fill up when you're beach bound, swing on by Chomp and treat yourself to a gourmet dog.
