People forget that David Coverdale used to sing with Deep Purple.  When Ian Gillan left in 1973, an unknown singer named David Coverdale auditioned for the band and, viola!

Over the course of two years, Coverdale recorded three albums with Deep Purple, 1974s "Burn" and "Stormbringer" and 1975s "Come Taste the Band."  Shortly after that, he left and went on to form Whitesnake.

**Completely unrelated, but a fun story nonetheless: the next Deep Purple album would be 1984s "Perfect Strangers" which saw Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore return to the band.  A year before Ian returned to Deep Purple, he was fronting Black Sabbath.**

This year, Whitesnake will release "the Purple Album," which will be comprised of songs from David's short stint in Deep Purple.  Now, I'm not a fan of artists re-recording old songs.  I think a better idea would be for Whitesnake to hit the road, perform an entire set of Deep Purple songs, and release a live album instead of a studio album featuring a bunch of re-recorded songs.  Oh well...

"The Purple Album" will be released on May 19.
