Phantasm is one of those movies I saw as a teenager and rewatched years later when I was an adult (and I use the word adult loosely, because even though I'm 30, I really don't consider myself an adult) and loved it so much the second time around, I kicked myself for not rewatching it sooner.

The movie views more like a dream (or in this case, nightmare) than a film.  The plot revolves around Michael, his brother Jody, and their friend Reggie, who are forced to team up to stop the Tall Man (played by Angus Scrimm) from stealing the town's dead.  The film has a some great sets, including many shot in graveyards, and inside mausoleums.  It's not much of a gorefest, but its most famous scene features a flying sphere with little knives that come out and attach to a person's forehead, drill into their skull and shoot blood all over the place.  Plus it has that great dark, dream like atmosphere that makes it a perfect film to view during the Halloween season.

Over the years, director Don Coscarelli has shot four sequels, with part 5 coming out any day now, but none of them come close to the sheer awesomeness that is the original.  I strongly recommend watching this if you haven't seen it already.  And if you have, then rewatch it!

Editor’s note: Each day in October, Ramone is picking a classic (or cheesy) horror film to review and share.
