If you or someone you know processes deer in Michigan as a business, the Michigan DNR now requires you to have a permit and keep records for 90 days.

Have no fear, the permit is free and easy to apply for at the provided link.

The DNR sites the reason for requiring the permit.

This permit will be issued in order for the Department to properly administer and oversee commercial processors who accept wild animals (for example, deer. elk, and bear) for processing and storage. The Department also requires an owner of any commercial processing operation to maintain records of all wild animals accepted for processing or storage for 90 days.

This, in my opinion, is long overdue and should be regulated like any meat processing company, from the big guys like JBS Packerland in Plainwell to the little guy who only processes deer seasonally, to help ensure there is no spread of harmful bacteria or disease.
