As we get closer to Spring, Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds the public that mandatory ice shanty removal dates are near.

Shanties should be removed regardless of date as soon as the ice is unable to hold them.

Counties in Southern Lower Michigan should remove shanties by Tuesday, March 1st. Following the removal dates, shanties still maybe used but must be removed daily from the ice.

According to the DNR, owners structures who fall through the ice are subject to penalties of up to 30 days in jail, fines of $100 to $500 or both.

If a government agency removes a shanty, the court can require the owner to reimburse the agency for an amount up to three times the cost of the removal.
