Grand Rapids is set to host some of the strongest kids in the country as the USA Weightlifting Nike National Youth Championships are at DeVos Place, June 14-17.

According to M-Live, the event is set to feature over 700 athletes from across the country and 25 from Michigan. Six athletes are from the Kalamazoo area.

If you are not familiar with weightlifting it features two events, clean and jerk and the snatch.   Each athlete gets 3 attempts for each lift in each session.  The highest completed lift in each event is the lifters score.  Highest total in each category is the winner.

This event will feature 3 age categories, 13 and under, 14 and 15 and 16 to 17. Boys and Girls will compete separately.

Weightlifting is one of those events that I usually try to catch during the Olympics as it is interesting to see some of the smaller weight classes lift more than they even weigh.

This will be great to see how strong some of these kids are and what they can do.   This event is actually one of four that USA Weightlifting hosts during the year.

Good luck to those involved and if you want more details on the event you can check out the Team USA Weightlifting site here.
