Those from Coldwater all know the historic Fiske House that resides at 867 E. Chicago Road, Coldwater. Phillip Jewell, the owner of Blue Hat Coffee (which the building serves as), has applied for a demolition permit for the historic Fiske house, after the latest action by the state of Michigan to raise his property taxes on the land it sits on.Jewell posted on Facebook:

In 2017 and 2018 we paid $18,298.33 in taxes on this property. The State of Michigan now plans to make sure that we pay more taxes. We will be paying close to $23,000 per year for property that is currently 70 percent trees.

Based on the increase in taxes my wife and I are looking at six to 10 properties (to relocate the business outside the Coldwater area). Unless we can find a buyer who wants to keep (the house), then we will leave it. If I had the money, I would develop behind the house, but we’ve put everything we have into this

The land alone currently is valued at $500,000. They'd love to keep the house and relocate it, unfortunately the project to do that is easily half of a million dollars, according to Jewell.
