The picture was sent to us by a listener. It's from the Kalamazoo area. Given this is October, it's probably safe to guess it's Halloween related. But this raises a question. Is this display offensive?

Some will say yes, some will say no. Earlier this year, the City of Kalamazoo decided to remove a display from Bronson Park that some said was offensive.  Is this the same thing? Well, yes and no. Yes, some might find it offensive, but this is on private property; Bronson Park isn't.

Is it a free speech issue? Probably not, for the same reasons as the 2017 confederate flag display on a truck in the Comstock area. Some might deem it insensitive, or in poor taste, but there's probably not anything illegal about it.

Take into consideration this country's racial history, displaying a lynching could be troubling to some, but in the same breath others would say it's simply harmless Halloween fun; nothing you couldn't see at a haunted house experience.  But with a haunted house, you are in a confined space and you're paying for the experience, essentially you know what you're getting, similar to a topless bar.

The lynching display isn't that. it's there for all to see, much like a bumper sticker with the f-bomb. If you don't want to see it, well, too bad for you.

There's valid points on both sides of this. Tell us what you think on our Facebook page. Speak your onions.
