The good news is that Kalamazoo saw more new restaurants open in 2018 than old favorites close. The bad news is, now I'm hungry.

Kalamazoo saw 9 new eateries open for business in 2018:

It's the ones that are gone that we will miss the most.

  • Cracker Barrel closed up shop and their country store in Texas Township iat the end of November 2018 after several failed attempts to eradicate a salmonella outbreak. The closest in the area is in Battle Creek.
  • Great Lakes Shipping Company is the biggest loss on the list, with a 40+ year history in Kalamazoo. Their Grand Rapids location closed in 2016.
  • Rykse's has consolidated operations to the Texas Township bakery as the DeNooyer car dealership expands on Stadium Drive.
  • Thankfully, Theo and Stacy's still has their Westnedge eatery and downtown location. The iconic Kalmazoo business shocked many when the Portage location closed in November.

Although we will miss the old favorites in the same old places, new flavors come along to tempt us and we have many great choices for places to dine out in Kalamazoo.
