In an effort to make roadways less hectic around Michigan for Memorial Day weekend travel, the Michigan Department of Transportation is suspending most road construction and restrictions as they typically do for holiday weekends. Beginning at 3pm Friday and continuing until 6am Tuesday, 89 out of 122 projects statewide will have lane restrictions removed.

Despite suspended projects, motorists are advised that equipment and certain traffic configurations, like temporary shifts or shoulder closures, may remain in place.

"We expect record travel this summer as people take in all our beautiful state has to offer. That's why it is more important than ever that we slow down, stay alert and avoid distractions in construction zones. Let's be mindful of the men and women working there who want to go home to their families at the end of the day, just as we do" - State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle.

AAA Michigan estimates that at least 1.3 million Michiganders are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home during the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That's a nearly five percent increase from the 2017 holiday and the most in more than a decade despite higher gas prices this year compared to the last several years.
