What are the least stressed out Michigan cities to live in?   Job site Zippia, the Career Expert, looked at 149 Michigan cities and found that Iron Mountain, Coach Tom Izzo’s hometown, is the least stressed-out place.   Marshall was the 4th best.  Ann Arbor and East Lansing were in the top third, so maybe they didn’t ask students around final exam time!

The MOST stressed-out places to live are all in the Detroit area:

  • Detroit
  • Hamtramck
  • Highland Park
  • Hazel Park
  • Inkster
  • River Rouge
  • Mount Clemens
  • Oak Park
  • Eastpointe
  • Dearborn Heights

Kalamazoo was listed as the 58th most-stressed city.

So what determines if a place is stressed-out or not?

Zippia selected a set of six criteria that reflect its root causes for most people and used them to look at the 149 places in Michigan with a population over 5,000 according to the 2010-2014 American Community Survey:

  1. Percentage of population with a long commute (over 30 minutes)
  2. Unemployment Rate
  3. Hours worked
  4. Population density
  5. Percentage of income spent on rent
  6. Percentage of population without health insurance
