Friend of the Rocker Morning Show, man-about town, movie critic, and raconteur, Ryan Jay stopped by The Rocker Morning Show to talk movies opening this weekend.

  • My All American:
    • “…this film is completely devoid of everything I like about sports movies.”
    • “It’s a very flat film. There’s no suspense in the sports scenes, so you’re not really rooting for anything. And the characters are all one-dimensional. They’re good people who just remain good and who never seem to have made a mistake in their lives.”
    • “That being said, we did see this with the movie club and almost everyone in the movie club section enjoyed the film. Some said they cried, some said they were tearing up… Some said they were totally into it”

  • Room:
    • “And it really is disturbing, sad, heart-breaking—disgusting, at times. And especially because you know that even though this isn’t based on a true story, it’s inspired by real-life experiences that people have like this, which is just devastating.”
    • “I was actually nauseous during parts of this movie because of how upsetting it is.”
    • “The performances are so strong. There’s Oscar buzz for both of these actors. Brie Larson as the mom is the current frontrunner and Jacob Tremblay as Jack would be the youngest male actor to receive a nom. They so fully realize these characters that you’re put, if not in their shoes, you’re in those four walls with them.”

  • Labyrinth of Lies:
    • “Labyrinth of Lies is a German film with English subtitles. It’s really stunning. It’s horrifying, it’s intriguing, it’s brilliant. It’s about holocaust deniers in the late fifties in Germany and deals with one underdog lawyer’s case which tries to pull the layer off…bring out into the forefront of the nation’s consciousness, what they were trying to deny for so many years.”
    • “There are so many dramatic confrontations between the Germans who don’t want the truth to come out versus the few justice-seekers that were there. Those moments were just really frustrating but also exhilarating.”
    • “…it was really good. I mean, I definitely recommend it. It was dedicated to these people who didn’t give up and continued to fight and ultimately won the case, finding justice not only for some of the victims, but you know, getting some of these guys who committed these heinous acts against humanity.”
    • See it!
