Burmese Cuisine Coming to Battle Creek as Shwe Mandalay Prepares To Open Summer 2018

Battle Creek has one less Chinese restaurant but is soon getting a taste of exotic Burmese food as Shwe Mandalay remodels to open soon.

When Tony's Chop Suey closed in April 2018 after more than 10 years in Battle Creek, there was already a plan to bring more flavor to the Cereal City. Shwe Mandalay Burmese Cuisine is engaged in remodeling the storefront at 451 W. Michigan Ave. and plans to be serving up delicious dishes by the end of Summer 2018.

In a June 23rd Facebook post, restaurant owners shared photos of the renovations so far, reporting that interior decorations were finished and landscaping efforts were underway on the property. They also shared the story of how the new business got its name:

Where and how does Shwe Mandalay Cuisine get its name? Here is the story behind the name of our restaurant: “Shwe Mandalay” comes from two words that has special meaning to us.

“Shwe” means gold in Burmese. Gold is something Burmese people value so much and the country is also known as “Golden Myanmar” or “Shwe Myanmar”. We take the word “Shwe” to represent something that is highly valued in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma).

The word “Mandalay” comes from the name of a city in Myanmar. Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Myanmar/Burma with many historical places with beautiful sceneries to visit.

We(owners)used to live in Mandalay where our lives were transformed in many different ways. Our major life transformations took place in this city that led us to where we are today.

As our lives were transformed in this city, we want to bring a life transforming experience here in Battle Creek through Shwe Mandalay Burmese Cuisine. This place is not just a restaurant. It is a place where you will get to enjoy our exquisite food as you learn our beautiful culture we bring to Battle Creek.
