This Is Why Michigan Has the 'Move Over Law'

In an effort to save lives, Michigan law requires drivers to slow down or move over for emergency vehicles; this video shows why. A Michigan State Police trooper was providing assistance to a tow truck operator moving a car from the ramp of M39 to I-96 in Detroit on Jan. 17 when a car speeds up the on-ramp and slammed into the back of the wrecker literally missing the driver by inches.

Called the "Move Over Law," it carries severe penalties for drivers who fail to slow down or move over for police, fire, rescue, ambulance or road service vehicles.

A motorist found responsible for violating the Move Over Law is guilty of a misdemeanor and is subject to four points on their driver’s license and fnes and fees of approximately $150. Motorists face enhanced penalties of up to 15 years in prison andor a $7,500 fne if the violation causes injury or death to a police ofcer, frefghter, or other emergency response personnel.

Distracted driving likely was a factor in this incident too.
