After the Detroit Tigers dropped two straight in Oakland on late-game heroics, they looked to avoid a third straight loss in the same fashion against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Tigers would get three runs in the fifth inning with timely hitting from Miguel Cabrera and Mikey Mahtook to take the lead for good in a 7-3 victory Tuesday. Mahtook and Nicholas Castellanos each drove in two runs on the night. James McCann and Justin Upton would each crush solo homers in the win.

Justin Verlander (3-2) allowed all three runs on seven hits in six innings of work while fanning seven on the night. Justin Wilson, after being announced as the new closer, threw the ninth inning in a non-save opportunity.

The conclusion of the two-game Interleague series is set for Wednesday night in Phoenix. The Tigers send out Matt Boyd (2-2, 3.78 ERA) and the Diamondbacks hand the ball to Zack Godley (0-0, 3.60 ERA).
