Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis Comes Up 4 points Shy of Record

For the last few weeks of the season, the entire college basketball nation has been on the edge of its seats as we have been on record watch. It's always exciting to watch the games and see how the NCAA March Madness turns out but watching records get broken is a totally different feeling.

"Pistol" Pete Maravich has the most career points in NCAA men's basketball history with 3,667 in his time at Louisiana State University (LSU). His record has been standing for over 50 years as he set it back in 1970 when he broke Oscar Robertson's record. As of yesterday March 2nd, we almost had a new record coming from a college in Michigan.

Antoine Davis has played the last 5 years for the Titans of Detroit Mercy where he has averaged 25.4 points per game in that time span. Going into his 5th and final year he had 2,880 career points, placing many eyes on him for record watch. As the season progressed the attention grew, and the chances began to grow.

Heading into the Horizon League Tournament with the Titans Davis only needed 63 points to pass Maravich for the All-Time scoring title. After dropping 38 points in the opening round, he only needed 25 points as Detroit Mercy was taking on Youngstown State.

Davis was cold most of the night and as he had 22 points with time winding down, he hoisted up a deep 3-pointer to try and tie the record. This would clank off the rim and fall out leaving him 3 points shy of tying and 4 points shy of owning the record. As they await to see if their season is over or if they will get a chance in the NCAA tournament or another postseason tournament, effectively giving Davis a chance to own the record.
