Michigan’s 8 Most Expensive Grocery Stores Are Too Fancy for Me
I have never had expensive tastes. Gas station coffee and off-brand cereal? Perfect. However, those in Michigan with more refined tastes and deeper pockets prefer to get their water run-through beans from baristas and do their grocery shopping at a place where you can pay a lot more for fancy packaging and pretentious branding. These Michiganders are shopping in America's most expensive grocery store.

Delish researched America's priciest grocery store. Wouldn't you know it? There are eight locations in Michigan.
The Most Expensive Grocery Store in Michigan
Take one lap around Whole Foods in Michigan, and you'll realize how the store earned the nickname "Whole Paycheck." My wife and I went once. I'm not allowed to go with her again (something about not needing price shock-related commentary and sarcasm for every item she puts in the cart).
How do I know Whole Foods isn't for me? The CBC reports that they once put a couple of pieces of asparagus in a water bottle and tried to sell it for $5.99. The bottle listed two ingredients: Water and Asparagus—$5.99. They later called that a "mistake."
Are you picturing a soccer game in Birmingham serving asparagus water with a charcuterie board post-game snack, too?
Whole Foods Michigan Locations
If you have any doubts that Whole Foods customers' financial standings are higher than those of a traditional grocery store shopper, here are the eight cities in Michigan where they are located and the US Census Bureau's median household income in each (the median household income for the entire state of Michigan is $71,149).
- Ann Arbor (2 locations)
- $81,089
- East Grand Rapids
- $168,487
- East Lansing
- $43,547
- West Bloomfield
- $127,162
- Birmingham
- $153,125
- Rochester Hills
- $119,054
- Detroit
- $39,575
Except for Detroit, and considering that Ann Arbor and East Lansing are home to the state's most prominent universities and a slew of poor students, it's pretty apparent that Whole Foods isn't targeting a morning show host who drinks gas station coffee and day-old donuts, and—I'm okay with that.
