House Bill 5987, introduced Tuesday, would let veterans of the US Armed Force, Armed Forces Reserve, or Michigan National Guard apply for a concealed carry permit for free, waiving the $100 fee everyone else has to pay. Veterans could also avoid the $115 fee associated with renewing the permit.

In Michigan, we already pay a 10 cent deposit on bottles and cans of carbonated beverages, a measure introduced 42 years ago in order to incentivize recycling. Now, a measure to spread that deposit to most other drinks is being considered.

The measure, which was vehemently supported by Gov. Rick Snyder and a bipartisan group of legislators, would have raised Michigan's sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent and generated additional funding to be used on roads, among other things.
