Bravo! Not only is Spring ice cream season, gelato is back as Via Gelato is opening for their third year in Portage.

Piera and Bob Fagaly are Vicksburg natives with a rich Italian heritage and an entrepreneurial spirit. Piera's father Jasper Mantrega emigrated to the area from Italy in 1960 and the family opened several Jaspare's restaurants around the area. Piera wanted to branch out and got the sweet idea from a great-uncle who was the first to sell gelato on the streets of Sicily. In June of 2017, they brought gelato to Portage and on April 1st, Via Gelato will reopen for the 2019 year.

Gelato is, essentially, the Italian version of ice cream but there are some key differences:

  • Gelato has less heavy cream which means it's generally less fat.
  • Gelato has less air whipped into it which makes it's denser and allows the flavor to come through stronger.
  • Gelato is served slightly above freezing point making it softer and allowing better tasting of the flavor.

At Via Gelato, it's all made in-house with Vegan and dairy-free options available.
