This September, Scottish voters will take to the polls to decide whether they should continue as part of the United Kingdom or branch off as their own separate country, and a growing list of celebrities from England, Wales and Northern Ireland have banded together to make their case for maintaining the status quo.

The campaign, dubbed Let’s Stay Together, boasts a petition with more than 15,000 signatures attached — including a list of “over 200 great names” whose ranks include Sting, Mick Jagger, David Gilmour, and ex-Roxy Music member Bryan Ferry, among many others. (The organizers have also put together a Spotify playlist, which you can stream while reading the supporters’ names.)

Let’s Stay Together is the brainchild of historians Dan Snow and Tom Holland, who strike a delicate tone on the campaign’s website, writing that “We believe that most people in England, Northern Ireland and Wales don’t want Scotland to leave the UK, yet respect the right of the Scots to decide this for themselves.” They add, “We believe that the key missing message is a positive, emotional one: not telling the Scottish electorate what to do or what not to do, but telling them how we feel about Scotland, about being part of the UK and about our collective place in the world.” (To that end, one of the video clips on the site is titled ‘Scotland, You’re My Best Friend.’)

Organizers of the pro-independence campaign, Yes Scotland, have issued a response to Let’s Stay Together’s chorus of celebrity voices, assuring them that there’s “no need to worry — we aren’t moving anywhere after a Yes vote” but adding, “It may have escaped your notice, but many people are struggling to make ends meet, to find well rewarded employment, to pay fuel bills or even feed their families. All this despite the fact we live in one of the world’s wealthiest countries. A Yes vote gives us an opportunity to change all that. We’re sure you’ll understand!
