With high temperatures expected to be in the 90s later this week throughout Michigan, here are some tips on how to stay cool. Admittedly, some are a bit unusual but most importantly, NONE of them require the use of an air conditioner. (Because let's face it, opening that electric bill is never fun.)

    Eat Some Spicy Food

Umm...what? I actually have never heard this before and I would think that eating spicy food would just make you hotter but I guess I'm wrong. According to the gang at The Penny Hoarder, when you eat spicy foods, "they stimulate heat receptors in your mouth which then raises your internal temperature and can cause you start sweating which will help to cool you down". Throw Your Sheets In The Freezer

Again...what?? This gem also comes from The Penny Hoarder. They suggest that you put your bed sheets in a plastic bag and let them sit in the freezer for a couple of hours before you go to bed. (Umm...never would of thought of that one either.) The sheets won't stay cold all night but it should help to cool you down for a little while.

    Bring On The Ice

A simple but yet effective tip from HGTV requires two things...some ice and a fan.  Turn that fan on high and put the ice right in front of it and you'll soon be a little cooler. Easy enough.

    Stick Your Feet In Ice

On these hot days just remember that ice is your friend. Besides the fan and ice trick (see above), you may also want to put your feet in a bucket of ice. Out of ice? No sweat! (LOL...a 'sweat' reference) Just fill that bucket with some really cold water and that should help. Click here to find out more from The Penny Hoarder. They do warn that you don't want to get too crazy with that icy cold water because "going too cold too fast could be painful."

    Shut Your Blinds

This tip is helpful for a couple of different reasons. First of all, your neighbors don't need to see you wearing something close to nothing on these hot days. But most importantly, you can get rid of some unwanted heat when you close your blinds. According to Consumer Reports, you can reduce the heat gain in your house by up to 33% when you shut your blinds. Click here to find out more.
