The Oldest Still-Operating Theater in Michigan

The League of Historic American Theatres has named the Croswell Opera House in Adrian as the oldest in the state. Not only that, but it’s been in continuous operation ever since it opened in 1866.

The Croswell was originally called the Adrian Union Hall, but when the son of Michigan’s current governor, Charles Croswell, became manager in the 1880’s, it was changed to Croswell’s Opera House. The governor had actually helped construct the building.

With the growing popularity of movies, by 1919 it was turned into a movie theater, seating 640 people.

In 1967, the Butterfield Theaters chain decided to terminate the Croswell’s lease. Fearing demolition, Adrian businessman Charles Hickman bought the Croswell and soon, live theater was once again taking place.

Recent renovations to the theater include more restrooms, studio theater, elevator, sound equipment, lighting & electrical, and more public spaces.
