It's been a couple years since former
Metallica bassist
Jason Newsted has been onstage, or anywhere, really. So his appearance with his
other old band, Voivod, last night (June 8) in San Francisco was a pretty big deal for fans.

As you can see in the photos above and below, and the fan-shot video below, Newsted joined the Canadian metal group during its stop at Slim's.

Newsted palled around with the band back in the mid-'90s, when he was still a member of Metallica, but his busy schedule with the music legends kept him from working much with the newer group. After he left Metallica in 2001, Newsted joined Voivod as a full-time member of the band's restructured lineup.

He played on three of Voivod's albums: 2003's Voivod, 2006's Katorz and 2009's Infini, which was released a year after his exit and the same year he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Metallica.

In 2014, Newsted canceled a series of concert dates with his latest band, the self-named Newsted, citing "private and personal circumstances." Later in the year, he shut down his Twitter, Instagram and Facebook accounts. That was pretty much the last anyone's heard from him before his appearance last night.
