Here’s a Jazzy Makeover of Metallica’s ‘Master of Puppets’
Is this the "passion play" Metallica were talking about in the title track to their breakout 1986 album, Master of Puppets?
Thanks to the ever clever Andy Rehfeldt (you know him from those metal gone Radio Disney songs), we now have a jazz version of Metallica's magnum opus. Ironically, the "passage play" lyric translates on another level here as it is also the title of a 2010 film which is centered around a struggling jazz musician played by Mickey Rourke.
Odd parallel aside, this jazz take on the 'Tallica classic is a fun one, especially with James Hetfield's gruff singing left in tact, serving as the only metallic trace to be heard. Jangling rhythms take hold of what's typically an adrenaline rush of an opening riff and transform the song into an energetic, bouncy track.
Metallica always seem to be a go-to when it comes to strange re-workings of metal material. The Internet, an endless well of mashups and stylistic makeovers, has also given us a medley where the guitar and bass parts to their songs were swapped. The blowback of the snare on St. Anger has resulted in fans saying it sounds like a trash can and one fan put it to the ultimate test, exchanging the snare for an actual trash can lid on a drum cover of "Frantic."
Regardless of what makeover Metallica's songs get, they all sound better than that time Snoop Dogg completely butchered "Sad But True" live at the MTV Icon event honoring metal's biggest band.
