Portage, Kalamazoo Setting Record Pace for Rain in July
West Michigan has been pummelled with late night storms and drenching rain events in the past few weeks. The Month of July, especially, has been full of long, rainy days, or heavy, soaking storms that march across the area.
It's not surprise, then, that some areas around here are on pace for setting records in July for rainfall amounts.
Flood watches and warnings were issued ahead of a heavy line of storms that came through southwest Michigan on July 15th in the middle of the night. Areas in Berrien, Van Buren, and even Kalamazoo County (Portage) received more than 3 inches or fain, while other places like Schoolcraft and Kalamazoo also receiving more than 2 inches.
In fact, there was so much rainfall in the area, it caused the Kalamazoo River to crest its banks into the flood plains, and cover Homer Stryker Field in more than a foot of water in some places, postponing some games for the Growlers.
But that's just the tip of the iceberg, because parts of southwest Michigan are still on pace for record amounts of rain in July following the remnants of Hurricane Beryl that came through earlier in the month.
Tack that on, and there are places in Kalamazoo County that have seen more than 15 inches of rain in the past month.
At this time, Kalamazoo has seen more than 27 inches of rain, which is well above the average of about 15 inches, and while we haven't set any records just yet, we could be well on our way if more comes.
