Starting on or around January 3rd of 2018, the National Weather Service will be issuing new winter weather warnings as needed for Michigan.

The new warnings will be called Snow Squall Warnings which is defined as an intense, but limited duration, period of moderate to heavy snowfall, accompanied by strong, gusty surface winds and possibly lightning (generally moderate to heavy snow showers). Snow accumulation could be significant during the time period.

I don't remember there being any lightning during winter when I was a kid but I have personally witnessed it the last two winters. Hopefully we won't be faced with too many of these warnings this upcoming season.
