Acclaimed actor John Hawkes, best known as Sol Star from Deadwood  and Teardrop in Winter's Bone, is back in the all-new dramady, End of Sentence. The Oscar nominee dropped in to the Rocker Morning Show to talk to Mike McKelly and Stefani Bishop about his latest project, his music, and who leaves him absolutely tongue-tied.
Hawkes became a household name among fans of the short-lived HBO series Deadwood. Cancelled too soon, the actor was more than happy to reunite with the cast for the much anticipated Deadwood movie which premiered last years. "It was so great to do the movie after all those years, after the show was cancelled. It was great to wrap it all up. I'm glad people liked that."
From the gun-slinging wild west to modern day Ireland, Hawke's latest film, End of Sentence, which costars former Rocker Morning Show guest Sarah Bolger, is a heartbreaking story of love and redemption. "It's kind of a fish out of water story, of a father and son who don't get along much at all and they're tasked with delivering some ashes to a lake in Ireland. There's a lot of comedy in there, too, but it's got a lot to say about people," the actor shared. "It's relatable. It's a very human thing."
Having had a rich career in film and television going back to the 1980s, Hawkes has met his fair share of celebrities, but one of the book junkie's most notable encounters was on the set of Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, when he met Doris Kearns Goodwin, the author of Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, a book that would be of major influence to the film's screenplay. "Doris Kearns Goodwin. When I was working on Lincoln, I got to meet her. I was strangely nervous, excited to meet her. It's funny who ties our tongue."
It's hard to imagine an actor so busy would have time for other artistic ventures, but music has been a passion of Hawkes' for many years. "You can find my music, if you're interested at Bandcamp. Rodney and John."
