If you’ve ever wondered how fireflies light up to begin with, it’s through bioluminescent chemical reactions in their abdomens. It involves a chemical called luciferin reacting with oxygen, which is catalyzed by an enzyme called luciferase and fueled by ATP, resulting in their abdomen glowing.
The light itself is more of a cold light, as it doesn’t produce much heat, and the firefly can actually turn it on and off.
There are some people who are worried that the current youngest generation will be the last to ever experience fireflies, as more people are doing harm to their natural surroundings, it will be harder for their population to grow, and in turn, dwindle.
