Having lived in Portage 28 years this month, I've often thought we needed upgrades to the parks and gathering areas.  One of them is near and dear to my heart because the first street we lived on back in 1990 was Garden Lane.  Celery Flats was right down the road and Karla & I would take the toddlers Ryan & Kaitlyn to Celery Flats.  Over the years they've made some upgrades but now we've got some big changes coming to The Flats.

According to our friends at MLive, a huge pavilion will be constructed and the layout of the historical area will be modified to allow for food trucks and other essentials to enhance the space.  What I'd like to see is the move toward a "party" or "festival" place like the one downtown Kalamazoo.  Of course, Celery Flats is on the edge of a neighborhood so we wouldn't be able to do night time concerts but at least Portage would have a true festival place.  Come to think of it, why aren't we using parks like Ramona for big festivals and night concerts?  After all, you can drink there already as is the case with other Portage parks.  I'll get right on that.  In the meantime, check out what things will look like at the Flats by clicking HERE.
