The Detroit Tigers went into the off season without a shortstop as Jose Iglesias became a free agent.   As the Winter Meetings continue in Vegas, the Tigers have reportedly found their new shortstop.

According to MLB.com, the Tigers will sign former Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop, Jordy Mercer to a one year deal.   The Tigers have not yet confirmed the deal.

The deal is a stop gap to give Tigers prospects, Willi Castro and Sergio Alcantara more  time to get ready for the majors.

Mercer has been in Pittsburgh the last six years and had a .256 average.  He was also apart of the postseason appearances for the Pirates between 2013 and 2015.

This latest signing comes after the Tigers just signed free agent pitcher Tyson Ross. Ross pitched last year with the Padres and Cardinals.

Next up for the Tigers is the Rule 5 draft on Thursday.   Spring training begins in  February in Lakeland, Florida.

The Tigers will open the 2019 season in Toronto on March 28th.
