Michigan GM Plants Announce They’re Laying Off Hundreds of Workers
We are only a few months into 2025 and already. There are some major companies in Michigan that are announcing layoffs in the auto industry, which have people nervous about the future of this once incredibly thriving industry in the state.
As far as the first round, it was announced in early April that Stellantis had temporarily laid off 900 employees in Warren and Sterling Heights, as well as workers at their Indiana and Mexico plants, according to a report from WXYZ.

Workers apparently received the following email from Antonio Filosa, the COO Stellantis Americas:
With the new automotive sector tariffs now in effect, it will take our collective resilience and discipline to push through this challenging time,. But we will quickly adapt to these policy changes and will protect our company, maintain our competitive edge and continue delivering great products to our customers.
Now another round of layoffs is taking place at the GM plants in Hamtramk and Detroit, according to the Detroit Free Press. It was recently announced that 200 workers at Factory Zero between the two locations would be laid off to, as they claim, "align with market dynamics."
These layoffs, however, don't seem to be involved with any kind of tariffs.
Impacted employees will be placed on a temporary layoff and may be eligible for subpay and benefits in accordance with the GM-UAW national contract. Impacted employees will be placed on a temporary layoff and may be eligible for subpay and benefits in accordance with the GM-UAW national contract.
