Former Grandville athlete Devin Booker went off for 40 points as his Phoenix Suns won game one of the Western Conference Finals.

Booker got his first triple double of his six year NBA career in the game, adding 13 rebounds and 12 assists to his totals to lead the Suns, who were playing without All-Star point guard Chris Paul.

The Suns 120-114 win over the Los Angeles Clippers gave them a 1-0 lead in the best of seven series. The winner will advance to the NBA Finals against the winner of the Eastern Final between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks.

Booker, whose mother is from Grand Rapids, moved to his dad's hometown of Moss Point, Miss. for his senior season. His father, Melvin, played in the NBA in the 1990s. From there, Booker starred at the University of Kentucky before being drafted by the Suns in 2015.

He has become one of a new vanguard of young talent in the league which includes other stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo of Milwaukee, Trae Young of Atlanta and Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Booker has improved steadily over his six seasons in Phoenix, to the point where the Suns have built their team around him, adding Paul this past offseason to help give the team some experience. It has helped as the Suns had the league's second best record in the regular season (behind Utah) and advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2010.

Booker averaged just over 25 points per game in leading the Suns to the Western finals.
