25 years have passed since Green Day released their monumental third album, Dookie. To celebrate the quarter-century landmark, Green Day performed “Basket Case” at the 2019 American Music Awards along with their new single “Father of All…”

Green Day were introduced by Billie Eilish, who also performed on last night’s (Nov. 24) award show. “So 25 years ago, Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool recorded their iconic album Dookie,” she began. “Growing up, there was no band more important to me or my brother. So celebrating Dookie and their new single “Father Of All…”, please welcome Green Day!”

Green Day launched into “Father of All…” first, giving their 2019 single a huge push to millions of households. After finishing up “Father of All…” Green Day popped the crowd with a nostalgic rendition of “Basket Case.”

Billie Eilish and Post Malone were just two artists who could be seen rocking out in the AMAs crowd. The room was practically shaking as fans jumped up and down for Green Day, who no doubt legitimized rock music to a legion of young hip-hop and pop fans.

“Gosh. I was only 22,” Billie Joe recently told Billie Eilish about Dookie in a Rolling Stone interview. “I had a kid at the same time, and I was married. So it was a crazy year. I remember being pretty freaked out. I was playing a kind of music that had never been on that kind of scale before. But what I really wanted to do was keep working, and keep writing songs. I never wanted to feel like I was taking advantage of the situation. I didn’t really stop and smell the roses. Later on, I was kind of like, ‘Did I enjoy myself enough? Was that fun?’ Because the feeling of when you first get popular as a musician, that never happens twice. After that, you have to keep creating new stuff to keep things interesting in your life.”

Full performance footage from the AMAs has not yet been released, but you can watch clips from the show above.
