Most people see things like empty milk jugs, soup cans, or broken appliances as trash.

Some Michigan kids see… robots.

How Kids Turn Trash Into Robots

At a recent West Michigan art event, kids and teens took everyday junk and turned it into creative, sometimes hilarious sculptures, including a 6-year-old’s winning entry: a full-on robot built from recycled materials.

Winning Entries and Creative Designs

We’re talking everything from plastic milk jugs and soup cans to parts from old household items like a broken toaster — items that would’ve otherwise ended up in the garbage or recycling bin.

The Eco-Art contest was sponsored by the Big Rapids Festival of the Arts, held earlier this month. Check out some of the winning entries on the group’s Facebook page.

And these weren’t just thrown together for fun. Many of the creations were designed with a purpose, including raising awareness about environmental issues like recycling and keeping waterways clean.

The event highlights the intersection of environmental stewardship and public art, encouraging artists, students, and residents to explore eco-friendly materials and processes. It also underscores community values of reuse, local collaboration, and outdoor creativity.

It’s part of a growing trend of “eco-art,” where artists use discarded materials to create something new — and in this case, pretty impressive.

On Public Display

Some of the pieces are now on public display, showing that with a little creativity, even trash can turn into something worth stopping to look at.

Honestly… some of these are cooler than stuff you’d buy in a store.
