Remember, the genius idea that the city of Kalamazoo had where they wanted to create a brand new way of driving on the road with a one-lane pilot program they planned to install on Kalamazoo’s Winchell Avenue? Well, it turns out that after many failures, which were predicted by many, they have decided that they are no longer going to move forward with the plan.

It didn’t even take 24 hours before the bumpers that they placed on Winchell Avenue were destroyed and had to be reconfigured because people were still unsure as to how to drive in this one-lane concept. After all, this is nothing like what was taught to us in driver training. Kalamazoo public services, Director, James Baker released a statement after getting a tremendous amount of negative feedback:

We recognize and appreciate that many had concerns about this new type of street, and we want everyone to feel safe and comfortable when using Winchell Avenue.

Any More Brain-Busters?

In lieu of this poorly planned project, parking spaces near Asylum Park. Preserve will be added on the south side of Winchell Avenue.

I’m just curious how much money was wasted by the city on this harebrained project that was not only never asked for by the people of Kalamazoo, but never approved by the people of Kalamazoo. In a city with a growing homeless issue that has no end in sight, the people in charge of making these decisions need to be held accountable for their failures.

Projects like this are completely unnecessary. Although I agree with the city and want to slow down traffic in certain areas, there are smarter ways of doing this, and by reaching out to the community and experts, these kinds of waste of money can be prevented in the future.
