April showers bring May flowers, but it also brings meteors with it! The Lyrid meteor shower will begin on Friday, April 15 and can typically be seen through late April. Though we've had unusually long-lasting cloud cover over the last month, West Michigan residents like myself are hoping the sky will clear in time to see these meteor streaking across the sky!

I am a self-described "space nerd" so I love anything and everything having to do with the cosmos. I look forward to the annual Lyrid meteor shower as at its peak between 10 to 15 meteors can be seen per hour.

In addition to the meteors, another celestial phenomenon will occur this weekend as the "Pink Moon" is set to rise on Saturday April, 16. Unfortunately, the moon will not actually look pink in color. According to the Farmer's Almanac the Pink Moon gets its name from the, "Early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.” Thus-- the Pink Moon!

Unfortunately the light from the full moon may make it a bit more difficult to see the meteors streak across the sky. However, the Lyrid meteor shower is set to peak next Friday, April 22 so hopefully the stars align and the cloud cover rescinds to make for perfect viewing conditions.

WWMT's Meteorologist Christina Anthony says, "Fortunately, this coincides with a clearing trend across the Great Lakes as a cold front departs, and high pressure builds in" so there just may be hope yet!If you're looking for a great viewing spot for the Lyrid meteor shower, Michigan is home to several dark parks across the state including an internationally certified dark park that is located in nearby Three Rivers. Far out!
