Mitchell O’Brien and Breanne Sika were recently walking along Lake Michigan as friends, but when they left the beach, they would officially be boyfriend and girlfriend after a two-year friendship.

It sounds like something out of a Hallmark movie, but only when you realize that it only happened this way because of a near tragedy. While they were looking for blue rocks in Leland on the shoreline at Van's Beach on Lake Michigan, Mitchell quickly sank into a pocket of sand and struggled to get out for about 15 minutes.

This is when he and his friend decided to call 911 to get some assistance. It was during the time that they were on the phone with the operators that the two inadvertently became boyfriend and girlfriend officially, as Mitchell tells in his story with Up North Live in the video below.

While I was on the phone with the 911 operator, she was trying to call as well. We were both trying to call because we were having some phone issues. I referred to her as my girlfriend who is trying to call as well, at the exact same time, she got through to another operator and said my boyfriend is stuck in the sand.

That was the first time they used those terms, and after he was eventually rescued from the Leland fire and rescue team, everything ended safely, and now they have a phenomenal story to share with their family. We're just happy that he was able to get out of the sand and live to tell the tale.
