New Kalamazoo DPS Explorers Will Have Hidden Life Saving Feature
Last October we found out that Kalamazoo Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies would be getting the fastest police cars available. Surprising to many, it will be the 2020 Ford Explorer. As I wrote back then: "According to an article on freep.com, the Ford Explorer-based law enforcement vehicle will be the fastest cop car on the street according to preliminary test data from the Michigan State Police. While the Dodge Charger was faster accelerating at lower speeds, the Ford Explorer was faster 0 to 50, 0 to 60 and 0 to 100. In fact, the Ford Explorer has the fastest top end at 150 mph!!! So, why do we need a vehicle to go that fast? These days some of the perps are blowing by at 120 mph and I guess you need to be able to get them off the road as soon as possible."
Well now we've found out that not only will they be fast, they've also got a hidden life-saving feature. More and more State Troopers are getting hit as they perform duties on our highways. According to another piece on freep.com, Ford Motor Co. has equipped the Interceptors with an extra 160 pounds of steel giving them the ability to withstand getting hit at 75 mph instead of the standard 50 mph.
