It has been a rough season for the Detroit Tigers but one of their few bright spots has been the hustle and play of Niko Goodrum.

According to the Tigers, Goodrum is the Tigers recipient of the Heart and Hustle Award.  Each major league team has a preliminary winner and is voted on by former players. The award honors players who, "demonstrate passion for the game and best embody the values, spirit and traditions of the game".

An overall winner will be announced on November 7th.   Goodrum joins current players such as Javier Baez of the Cubs, former Tigers catcher/ current White Sox catcher James McCann, DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees and Max Muncy of the Dodgers among the various preliminary winners this year.

Boston Red Sox outfielder, Mookie Betts was the overall winner last season.  Mike Trout, Anthony Rizzo, Todd Frazier and Brett Gardner have also won the award in recent years.

Voting on the award took place before the recent all star break.
