This Michigan Farm Being Ordered To Demolish Their Barn & Business By The Township
In late 2003 the Kalamazoo area farm Soil Friends filed a 12 count federal lawsuit against Comstock Township. This all started in 2022 when the township shut down Soil Friends in a controversial decision that has since lead to a lot of drama between owner and founder Ben Martin and the township.
In early December 2023 the 12 federal lawsuit was brought up on many different counts, including violation of due process, defamation under state law, civil conspiracy, and many others which can be viewed here. At the time, Mr. Martin explained his reasoning behind the lawsuit. It was also reported that Soil Friends Farm and the township had came to an agreement, but according to the owner, this was not the case.

Mr. Martin claimed that they did come to a resolution, because the township failed to do their other end of the objective which in-turn, led them going back to square one. Now, Mr. Martin has received a letter from Kalamazoo Area Building Authority that claims the Township is giving him three options moving forward, one of which is to demolish and remove his red barn in accordance with all local ordinances and regulations.
You can view the final notice that was given to his family below, but as Ben Martin told us in an email, this is a complete injustice to his business, which is located at 1701 N. 33rd St. in Galesburg:
Although I've got a stipulated court order to be able to make hard cider and we're busier than we've ever been, things are going very well. Now the Township is ordering their local building authority. If we don't kick our brewery out within 30 days, they're going to demolish it.
Mr. Martin has been very transparent about the issues between his farm and the township and he is considering the next steps to take in what he says is clear harassment.
