Is the use of AI slop harming the image of businesses in Southwest Michigan?

One of the hot-button topics and debates that have been going around social media is the use of AI and AI data centers in general. No doubt by now you’ve heard of the conflicts that people have with these data centers and the concerns that people have when it comes to the well-being of our environment.

But to put a finer point on it, there are a lot of people who are using AI generators to generate images to promote their business or create logos for their small business. This has led to many people in the community voicing their opinions in comment sections, expressing their distaste for AI slop.

It’s referred to this way because you’ve no doubt started seeing an array of flyers for events or restaurants that look painfully identical.

Everything in the photo looks over-exaggerated and oversaturated. However, some feel the worst part about the use of AI imagery is that it steals artwork from artists who have not consented to have their creations stolen. That and it almost seems to set a double standard.

Why would anybody want to come and support a local business when they themselves couldn’t pay a local artist to come up with a unique and human-made design for them, helping out another local artist or business? Is the use of AI imagery getting too out of hand?
