As of this writing (March 26th), the Detroit Tigers have 36 players in major league camp.  This after optioning outfielder Daz Cameron to Triple-A Toledo on Friday morning.  That's 10 more than they can carry for Opening Day, which is next Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park against the Cleveland Indians (heard on Lansing's Big Talker 1240 WJIM at 12:50pm next Thursday).

Guys like Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal, Grayson Greiner, Julio Teheran and non-roster invitee Derek Holland have already been told they've made the team, according to mlb.com's Jason Beck.

So who does that leave as potential cuts before Opening Day?  As far as pitchers go, Spencer Turnbull will start on the injured list after being reportedly hit with COVID-19.  So non-roster pitchers Zach Hess, Ian Krol, and Erasmo Ramirez probably won't go north.

Former AL Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer did not make the starting rotation and will start the season in the bullpen.  He is expected to be joined by Tyler Alexander, Bryan Garcia, Rony Garcia, Buck Farmer, and Joe Jimenez, as well as the aforementioned Derek Holland.

As far as position players go, the outfield looks like Jacoby Jones in center, free agent acquisition Robby Grossman in right, and Nomar Mazara in left.  Rule 5 pick Akil Baddoo has hit well in Florida and might force former Rule 5 pick Victor Reyes to a ticket back to Toledo.

The infield features Jeimer Candelario, Harold Castro, Willi Castro, Niko Goodrum, and Jonathan Schoop.  Miguel Cabrera (pictured above) is the designated hitter, but might play some first base this year.  The catching position is set with Wilson Ramos starting and Grayson Greiner backing up.  Eric Haase or Jake Rogers are next if there are any injuries.

Some tough decisions for A.J. Hinch, but I think that's a good thing.  No longer is it acceptable to go 65-97 and finish in last place.  The Tigers need to show major improvement this season.  Anything between 70-80 wins is acceptable to me.
