It’s almost the time of the year when we get to go out and buy a ton of candy to hand out to kids in their costumes as they try to fill as much of it as they can on Halloween night for trick-or-treating.

But there’s one thing that I noticed about trick or treating in Michigan that has never really been addressed. Is it illegal for people in apartments to hand out candy for trick-or-treating?

You never see people in apartments giving out candy on Halloween night. I tried this during the one year I was living in an apartment in the Winchell Neighborhood.

The only trick-or-treater I had was the guy delivering my Chinese food, and even he refused to take the candy because he wanted to save it for kids, not knowing that there were zero kids taking the candy.

We even decorated the porch with spooky music and flashing lights to let people know that they could come and take some.

So I looked into whether or not it’s illegal in Michigan for people in apartments to do trick-or-treating. As much as I can see from southernmanagement.com, the most important thing is to check the community guidelines or rules that are set by the property manager or community board:

Start by reviewing any guidelines or rules set by your property manager or community board regarding Halloween celebrations. Adhere to designated trick-or-treating hours and participate in organized events if possible.

Ultimately, if you want people to visit you at your apartment on Halloween, you may just have to hope the kids who may live there or in the area consider your place as an option.
