Two Michigan Restaurants Named USA's Restaurants of the Year

It’s always great when local restaurants get recognized by national publications for being just a little bit different than all the others. In reality, it would be way too hard to identify every single incredible restaurant that’s in Michigan every year, so I think publications like USA Today’s 2025 restaurants of the year have to show a little bit of love to different areas throughout the country every year.

Recently, two Michigan restaurants were named amongst the best restaurants. Mabel Gray, located at 23825 John Rd. in Hazel Park, Michigan, and Tomato Brothers Restaurant and Tavern, located at 3030 W. Grand River Ave. in Howell, Michigan.

So what separates these two from the rest? USA, today’s local food writer gave the following recommendations as to why they were chosen out of all the restaurants in Michigan.

Mabel Gray

Few Detroit-area restaurants offer the level of continuous excellence that Mabel Gray exudes. There are tried-and-true classics, like steak frites, a 60-day dry-aged, bone-in American wagyu strip steak served with a hearty bowl of house-made fries decorated with pecorino and herbaceous clippings of fresh rosemary.

Tomato Brothers

People come for the classic Italian and Greek menu: the tasty pizza and meatballs and the pasta portions as big as your head. But really, truly, they come for the breadsticks — an unintended family addition that's known across the country, and even by celebrity actor Dax Shepard
