The Barrel in the lakeside resort community of Douglas is back in business serving up hot dogs and root beer.

In addition to being an exceptionally cool building, the are serving up what the city says will take you back to yesteryear.

The Barrel had been a well known and loved landmark in the Saugatuck/Douglas area but had fallen into disrepair. The Root Beer Barrel had served suds from the mid-1950s through the 1970s.

A group hoping to see the icon restored called Friends of the Barrel got to work on the seventeen-foot tall structure and have held their Grand Opening. The stand is open weekends presently and is at Center and Ferry in Douglas.

The Saugatuck-Douglas History Center has photos going back decades to the heyday of The Barrel.
