It’s a lovely time of the year when we need to turn our heat up and look forward to getting out of the blistering cold and into our warm, comfy clothes at home. With that being said, it’s understandable that our Consumers Energy bills will once again be getting higher, as we are using more gas heating our homes and our apartments.

I myself was caught off my guard a little bit when I recently saw a $270 energy bill after the previous bill was $52.

Surprises like that may become a regular thing as Consumers Energy made an announcement that could show a more consistent rise in energy costs, and end up costing us all more money to stay warm.
This paperwork that they just filed to the utility regulators looks to increase natural gas rates by $248 million. From our current rates, that’s roughly a 12% price height from what we see on our bills.
You may be asking at this point, “Why the hell would they even think of doing this?”
They basically gave us the ole’ conglomerate, razzle-dazzle of it will improve safety measures, something something infrastructure, something something reliability.
You can read the full breakdown of the projected increase here, but I highly doubt that environmentalists will allow us to take place.
At such a struggling financial time where rent is way too high, buying a house is more difficult than ever for young buyers, this seems like a very unnecessary increase by Consumers Energy. Do you feel it's too much?

Michigan Mansion Built in 1916 by Consumers Energy Founder

In 1886, two brothers were tasked with providing electric lighting in downtown Jackson, Michigan. William A. and James B. Foote would make their mark in the town, with William's wife later founding Foote Hospital (now Henry Ford Health). In 1916, James had a home built for himself and his family at 735 W Washington Avenue. Here's a look at what that home looks like over 100 years later courtesy of The Brokerage House
