They are known for their philanthropy during the holiday season, now it's about gluttony as the Salvation Army stages a donut eating contest at Sweetwater's.

National Donut Day, the first Friday in June, was created to honor the Salvation Army's “Donut Lassies” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. The tradition continues as Kalamazoo branch plans to deliver 72 dozen donuts to first responders and military operations throughout Kalamazoo County, Plainwell and Otsego.

But first, the fun.

2nd Annual Donut Eating Contest

Tuesday June 4 | Noon

Sweetwater's Donut Mill | Stadium Drive | Kalamazoo

I will be one of the thirteen contestants (a bakers dozen, natch) contestants that will have 10 minutes to knock down as many donuts as we can. I'm not sure if they are going to be long johns, powdered, glazed, jelly or plain cake donuts but I know it is going to be a lot of fun to watch.
