AAA predicts more than 3.5 million Michigan motorists will be on the road for the Christmas holiday season.

Holiday gatherings are a big part of Christmas and, this year, low gas prices are helping more travelers remain jolly. Nationally, 1 in 3 Americans will travel and this year more will travel by car than ever before. AAA forecasts more than 102 million people are expected to pack up their cars for road trips. That number is 4.4 percent higher than last year and is the most since AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2001.

In Michigan, 3.5+ million will take to the weathered roads; matching the national 4% increase, and low fuel prices are making it easier. Nationally, gas prices were $2.37- the cheapest average on record for December since 2016 and 30 cents less than a year ago and Michigan prices at the pump have surprisingly declined.

AAA travel predictions are based on trips of 50+ miles between December 22 and January 1.
