A facility in Romulus that was purchased by ICE to be converted and used as an immigration detention center has been shot down, and now ICE has nothing to do but sell the facility.

FOX 2 reports that Attorney General Dana Nessel announced ICE has abandoned its plan to convert the warehouse near Detroit Metro Airport at located on the 7500 block of Cogswell Street.

Now, ICE and the Department of Homeland Security have decided to sell the warehouse, according to their report:

ICE purchased the location in February, but Nessel later said the purchase was made without notice to Michigan, the City of Romulus and without fulfilling statutory requirements. The facility conversion was stalled after Nessel sought a court order to stop construction, which was briefed in April. DHS and ICE then agreed to delay initiating construction, pushing the start to the end of June, then through the end of July.

The presence of ICE in Michigan has been controversial, with many people protesting not only their use of force but what they say is a massive misuse of funds being poured into the organization that could go towards a much better use. It hasn't just been adults, but even children speaking out against ICE.

Schools all over the state, including Lakeview High School in Battle Creek had planned walk-out events, where students organized a peaceful protest in February showing support for their fellow classmates.

What's Next For The ICE Detention Center Building?

Attorney General Nessel said the case will remain active until DHS and ICE reach a written agreement saying they will never use the Romulus warehouse as a detention center.
